The incoming Trump administration has tapped commissioner Brendan Carr to lead the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), signaling a strong commitment to free-market telecommunications policy in the coming years. Digital Liberty congratulates Commissioner Carr for his selection.

Prior to his commission appointment by President Trump in 2017, Carr held a number of influential positions within the telecommunications policy space, including service as the Commission’s General Counsel. Furthermore, since his appointment, Carr has maintained a distinguished record at the FCC throughout his past seven years of service. By leading crucial opposition to wasteful broadband deployment projects as the agency’s senior Republican commissioner, Carr has demonstrated a robust commitment to curbing administrative excess. Furthermore, as a champion of rural connectivity efforts, including the closing of the “digital divide”, Carr has cemented himself as a dedicated advocate for the telecommunication policy needs of everyday Americans.

As Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, has noted:

“Commissioner Carr has worked diligently to oppose the overreaches of the Biden FCC and will restore freedom to the internet. Carr has fought back against the Biden FCC’s attempt to micromanage internet service via net neutrality and fought against the disparate impact standard — the trial lawyers’ favorite. Commissioner Carr has been a champion of liberty against the Left’s attempts to seize the means of communication.”

Already adept at curbing the excesses of the administrative state, as FCC Chair, Commissioner Carr’s expertise in wireless policy will serve the Commission well in making key decisions within the FCC’s broad jurisdiction. Commissioner Carr’s nomination as FCC Chairman represents a pivotal moment for the future of telecommunications policy. With a proven track record of prioritizing free-market solutions, enhancing rural connectivity, and safeguarding internet freedom, Carr embodies the leadership needed to restore efficiency and innovation at the FCC. Digital Liberty proudly supports Commissioner Carr’s confirmation and urges swift action to secure his leadership at the helm of the FCC. We look forward to the rollback of some of the Commission’s recent ill-considered rulemakings and exciting new policies.
